Google Earth’s New Tool Lets You Measure The Distance And Area Of Anything On The Map

Google is making it easier for you to measure just about anything on Earth.

The tech giant announced a new feature for Google Earth. A feature that will allow you to measure the distance between any two points on the planet. The new tool can also measure areas, like the size of the park near your home or any number of stadiums around the world.

In a blog post, Google Earth Product Manager Gopal Shah called the measurement feature “one of the most requested” among users.

“This is a potentially useful feature for anyone looking to figure out the size of a park near a house they’re considering buying. It can also help teachers by challenging students to use it to determine which state or desert is biggest out of a multiple-choice selection. “Ever wonder how far your hometown is from the North Pole? Or maybe, you simply want to measure the length of that hike you just finished. One of the most requested features for Google Earth is the ability to measure distance and areas, he added.

Since Google Earth relaunch in April last year, the company hadn’t pulled all the features into the new web-based incarnation which is now Google’s main area of focus for Earth. but perhaps that’s because the desktop version has offered a similar tool for more than a decade. Google turned Earth Pro into the standard version for desktop in 2015, and began offering it for free. That"s still available if you are looking for something more sophisticated and feature-rich.

In the images shown, this new feature can be used by clicking on the Measure Tool icon (Measure Tool icon). This will put you into a new mode where you can perform a variety of measurements.

For example, you can determine the square feet of an area by tracing around a particular location. And also you can also use the tool to compute the distance between two locations no matter where they are on Earth.

The “measure tool” is arriving in Google Earth on Chrome from today, followed by Android later this week and iOS at an as-yet-unannounced future date. In a nutshell, it lets you measure the distance between point A and B, or the area or perimeter between multiple points.
