Intel Chip Shortage Will Hurt PC Sales As Demand Is Expected To Grow This Holiday Season

Image
Intel isn"t making sufficient processor chips to take care of demand. Now this has been going on for some time but the reason it’s making headlines now is because as we near the holiday season, PC sales are expected to jump. Now analysts J.P. Morgan think the Intel situation is going to be a problem. The firm gauges the Intel processor and chipset lack will sting final quarter PC shipments by 5 to 7 percent. According to Gokul Hariharan who is J.P Morgan’s Asia-Pacific technology analyst who spoke to CNBC, "Our conversations with PC vendors indicate that the shortage, which started in small magnitude in 3Q, has been progressively worsening and is likely to have the maximum impact in 4Q18. This drove Intel shares down 0.1 percent on Friday in a sign that there may actually be a shortage by year’s end. He continued by saying "We expect this to affect both notebook and desktop PCs and likely to have a higher impact on commercial and high-end consumer PCs, where using...

Opera Becomes First Major Desktop Browser To Integrate In-built Cryptocurrency Wallet

Image
Opera web browser is now the first of the major browsers to include a cryptocurrency wallet and by doing this, they have removed the need for third party extensions thereby increasing the security of such transactions for users.  This desktop wallet supports major cryptocurrencies like Ethereum and synchronises with the mobile version (Opera for Android) which was announced back in June. In a statement by Opera’s EVP of Browsers, Krystian Kolondra he said “after making crypto payments smooth and easy on mobile, we wanted the find the perfect solution for PCs. We realised the best way is to utilise our new mobile crypto wallet technology and to give our PC users access to it.” The security in the Opera approach is that instead of having to enter some kind of password, you just approve transactions using the biometric provisions like the fingerprint scanner to do it. Cryptographic keys and other resources are put away locally on the user’s telephone, as oppose...

Windows 10 Now Uses Machine Learning To Stop Updates Installing When A PC Is In Use

Image
Have you ever stepped away from your PC only to return and find it in the middle of an update? Such is the bane of forced updates on Windows 10. They"re not disappearing, but Microsoft is employing machine learning to train Windows 10 not to update itself at an inappropriate times. Windows 10"s overly aggressive update system, which sometimes restarts while using the device, has been a point of frustration for many users for a long time. Software has been developed to prevent forced update of Windows 10 by volunteers, but of course Microsoft also receives feedback from users and recognises that there is a problem with Windows 10 update. Microsoft currently has a snooze feature to postpone installing updates, but it still seems that complaints of "restarting while using the device" are still being sent.  To combat this issue, Microsoft has been testing a new system that uses a predictive model to learn when devices aren’t in use. So instead of applying an update whil...

Microsoft Mulls Launching Its Movies & TV App On iOS And Android

Image
Microsoft may soon extend its Movies & TV app beyond the Windows 10 hub. “Microsoft is building these apps to give consumers more of a reason to buy content in the Microsoft Store”.  According to a report by Windows Central . “Lots of people buy digital movies and TV content, and Microsoft has a huge store that a lot of people seemingly ignore or don’t know about because there is no mobile companion app for their phone,” the report added. Last June, Microsoft shut down its Groove Music service after announcing a partnership with the music streaming platform Spotify . The company requested its customers to transfer everything they had saved, downloaded and playlists they had created on Groove to Spotify, media reported. But the company did not touch the “Movies & TV” app then. The Microsoft Store has an impressive collection of films and TV shows available to buy, including many that aren"t available via streaming services, but until...

WhatsApp May Be Working On A desktop App For Windows PCs

Image
After achieving massive success with its mobile application, the social media giant WhatsApp is planning to strengthen its desktop presence and thereby become active in almost every space a user inhabits throughout the day from home to the office. Facebook owned messaging service WhatsApp is reportedly working with Microsoft to deliver a proper desktop app. WhatsApp is one of the few developers that consistently delivered updates to its Windows Phone app, but a report by Windows Central suggests WhatsApp is actually getting ready to deliver a proper desktop app as well. Over the years, there has been a huge demand for a native WhatsApp client for Windows computers. The idea of using a proper PC setup for chatting with your pals certainly appeals to many, even the developers themselves. However, there hasn’t been any dedicated app yet but the web client has been useful. It seems now that it’s about to change. Concept art for a Universal Windows platform (UWP) version of What...
