Image
Facebook makes a move to make the UK 2019 elections fake news free Following the controversies that trailed Facebook for weeks after the revelation about the data leak of over 87 million users used to aid president Trump in the last US election, the social network"s chief technology officer will make a promise to ensure that the platform will not be used to compromise the election result in the UK. Fake news thrived in the US, and even though Russia was blamed, the social media firm was reprimanded for not being quick enough to dissolve the divisive ads, remove the fake news created by the Russian propagandists and for allowing its platform to be abused by Russian propagandists. The Russian propagandists were accused of creating counterfeit pages to sew mistrust and influence user behaviour during voting. To prevent a similar occurrence, Mike Schroepfer, the CTO will be pledging to ensure that every ad is authorized before they can go live in the UK and Northern Ireland in the 201...

The United States and the United Kingdom have released a joint statement accusing the Russian government of maliciously targeting the global internet infrastructure for espionage purposes. In other words, Russia could be looking to engage in a cyber warfare that would see it divert most of the internet traffic for political and economic reasons. The statement by the U.S. (Homeland Security and the FBI) and the U.K"s. National Cyber Security Centre said the fundamental targets include public and private sector infrastructure. In an AP report , "Victims were identified through a coordinated series of actions between U.S. and international partners," according to a companion technical alert issued by the U.S. Computer Emergency Response Team (US-CERT). Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg Apologises In US and UK Newspaper Ads

Image
Mark Zuckerberg has advertised on full-page US and UK newspapers to apologise for the recent data scandal his platform has caused. He admitted doing wrongly, at least. He said that Facebook could have prevented their data from being exploited by the British political consulting firm in 2014. " This was a breach of trust, and I am sorry ," he said in the ads. This means more than one thing. First, it proves Dave Lee wrong. He had earlier argued that " contrition has never been Mr. Zuckerberg"s strong point " because he did not officially apologise to the staff members who had been entangled in the scandal and to the affected users whose data were exploited. Secondly, he could be keeping to the end of his bargain because the social media firm is currently running at a loss. Last week, the firm lost about five million dollars. Elon Musk deleted all his firm"s pages on Facebook, sparing only two- the Boring company and the AI firm which he co-owns. The BBC rep...

Female Politicians Clamour For A Clamp Down On Online Abuse Against Women On Twitter

Nicola Sturgeon, Ruth Davidson, and Kezia Dugdale are supporting an Amnesty International campaign which claims that Twitter has become baneful for women. The three women reported that they had been threatened with death and rape on the social network. Twitter disagrees with the human rights group; says its network has no power to "delete hatred and prejudice from the society." It"s worse on social media because there"s no real conversation taking place, so it"s much easier for people to become toxic behind their keyboards. It emphasised further that it had reviewed its policies severally to improve safety and curtail abusive tweets on its network. The #ToxicTwitter campaign features interviews of over 80 women which give detail on violence and abuse against women on issues about race and sexual preferences.  These women are threatened with rape and death on a daily, with journalists and public figures being targets.  Twitter users who are not public figures w...

Facebook In Fresh Crisis With US And European Politicians Over The Cambridge Analytica Data Misuse

Image
Recently, Facebook has been in the news for exploiting users" data without permission. A few days ago some privacy campaigners accused the social media of breaching data protection law. While the new rule by the legislation is yet to come into force, Facebook is under fire for aiding Donald Trump"s 2016 election campaign. The London-based firm, Cambridge Analytica is accused of breaching data rights by inappropriately collecting personal data of about 50million users on Facebook to influence the US election in 2016.  Political figures in the UK, Europe, and the US have requested that Facebook gives a vivid explanation on how the data on numerous users was produced. Both firms have denied any wrong-doing. Facebook says it will investigate Cambridge Analytica"s pages on its platform to determine how the data of millions of millions of users was harvested if they had been gathered unjustly and were still handy. Given this, the social media firm says it has hired a digital f...

UK Watchdog Blocks Facebook And WhatsApp Data-Sharing Plan

Image
Facebook which acquired WhatsApp in 2014 made an official announcement of its intention to coordinate Facebook and WhatsApp to offer "better friend suggestions and show you more relevant ads if you have an account with them." While Facebook may be acting in good faith, the EU Commission thinks that this will constitute a breach of an existing data protection law. The UK has denied Facebook the access to allow UK citizens WhatsApp data beyond the purpose of chatting. The EU commission maintains that the Data Protection Act allows people the right to privacy and WhatsApp’s attempt to coordinate both Apps defeats the consumers" rights. Given this, WhatsApp has signed an undertaken that stipulates that they have given "a public commitment not to share personal data with Facebook until they can do so in compliance with the upcoming General Data Protection Regulation which comes into force in May this year." Facebook Bans "Britain First" Pages For Promoting Hate Speeches

Image
These days, the social media is a great avenue to gain popularity, and one of the tactics that some people employ is to use hate speeches without caring about the effect that their actions have on others. Most famous are the jihadist groups which do as much as to incite anything anti-Islam. However, a reverse group known as Britain First, an anti-Islam group has been pulled down by Facebook for violating community standards. The anti-Islam group"s leaders, Paul Golding and Jayda Fransen were found guilty of religious harassment earlier this month and were jailed afterward. With over 2,000,000 likes and followings on their Facebook page, the group ignored a warning from Facebook, asking them to take down every post that incites hatred against Muslims. Some of the notable posts included a caption " Islamophobic and Proud " with the group leaders" photo; another caption compared Muslim immigrants with animals and a series of videos to indicate deep hate for Islam. The ...

Renowned British Scientist Stephen Hawking Dead At 76

Image
Stephen Hawking, British theoretical physicist has passed away at 76 Stephen Hawking, the brilliant British theoretical physicist who overcame a debilitating disease to publish wildly popular books probing the mysteries of the universe, has died, according to a family spokesman. He was 76. Considered by many to be the world"s greatest living scientist, Hawking was also a cosmologist, astronomer, mathematician and author of numerous books including the landmark "A Brief History of Time," which has sold more than 10 million copies.   With fellow physicist Roger Penrose, Hawking merged Einstein"s theory of relativity with quantum theory to suggest that space and time would begin with the Big Bang and end in black holes. Hawking also discovered that black holes were not completely black but emit radiation and would likely eventually evaporate and disappear.   "A star just went out in the cosmos," Lawrence Krauss, a theoretical physicist and cosmologist,  wrote...

Mandatory Age Verification On Porn Sites In The UK Delayed Till Year"s End Most Likely

Image
The plan to punish porn sites in the UK who don"t comply with age verification regulations delayed further As far back as the Digital Economy Act moved toward becoming UK law this time a year ago, we"ve known there would come a period when porn sites would be constrained to check the British visitors to guarantee that it is grown-ups who have access and not minors. Shortly after, the UK"s digital minister set a due date of April 2018, and soon thereafter porn sites would need to go along or be punished by the government. We had accepted everything was on track, yet the UK government has conceded that they are nowhere close to making this happen, and now it expects age check won"t be enforceable until the maybe year"s end and that"s assuming nothing goes wrong again. The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC), which chooses the age appraisals for motion pictures, games and music videos, as of late went up against the extra part of porn controller. The ...
